Eat Like A Local is a street food and market experience designed for curious travelers who want to understand Mexico City through its food and the people behind it.
We visit local markets, street stalls, and neighborhood spots, not tourist restaurants. Expect crowds, noise, and the real rhythm of the city.
If you are looking for a quiet restaurant experience, this tour may not be the right fit for you.
.
No.
Each Eat Like A Local tour follows a different route through the city and visits different markets, vendors, and neighborhoods.
There is no overlap between stops, which means every tour offers a completely different experience.
Many guests choose to take more than one tour during their stay in Mexico City.
No.
Eat Like A Local offers several different routes, and each experience has different conditions.
Some tours involve more walking, others include subway rides, and the amount of food can vary depending on the neighborhood and vendors visited.
Please review the specific tour page and itinerary before booking to understand the route, walking requirements, and overall experience.
This experience is designed for curious and adventurous travelers who want to explore Mexico City beyond the typical tourist areas.
The tour takes place in real markets and local neighborhoods, which can be busy, noisy, and sometimes unpredictable.
Guests should be comfortable walking through markets, standing while eating, and experiencing the city in its natural rhythm.
Eat Like A Local takes place in real markets and local neighborhoods, not controlled restaurant environments.
Markets can be busy, noisy, crowded, and sometimes chaotic. Floors may be wet, spaces can be narrow, and seating is often limited or informal.
This is part of the authenticity of the experience and the daily life of Mexico City.
If you are looking for a polished or highly comfortable environment, this tour may not be the right fit.
Our scheduled tours are small group experiences for 7 people.
This allows guests to meet other travelers and helps us keep the experience accessible while supporting the vendors we work with.
If you are interested in a private experience, please contact us to check availability and pricing.
Yes, children are welcome.
However, all guests — including children — require a full ticket.
Our tours are intentionally small and limited to seven guests per group, and each child occupies one of those available spots.
In addition, we still pay vendors for tastings and often prepare special treats for younger guests, such as candies, small surprises, or traditional items that make the experience fun and memorable for them.
For these reasons, we are unable to offer discounted tickets for children.
Please note that the tour takes place in busy markets and involves walking, so parents should consider whether the experience is suitable for younger children.
Large strollers are not permitted on the tour.
Our route includes stairs, narrow market aisles, and public transportation, where large strollers can be difficult or impossible to accommodate.
If you are traveling with a baby, we recommend using a baby carrier instead of a stroller.
Pets are not allowed on the tour.
Part of the experience involves using public transportation, and public transit in Mexico City does not generally allow pets, which makes it difficult to include them during the tour.
For this reason, pets cannot be accommodated.
The price shown on our website is the total price of the experience and already includes all costs of the tour.
For operational reasons, the payment is simply split into two parts:
• 50% is paid online as a deposit when booking
• The remaining 50% is brought in cash on the day of the tour
Together, these two payments equal the total price displayed on the website.
Yes.
Your booking includes:
• All food tastings
• Transportation used during the tour
• Bathroom access when needed
• Gratuities for the vendors we visit
You do not need to bring extra money during the experience beyond the remaining cash balance indicated in your booking confirmation. Unless you want to shop for spices, mole or souvenirs
The price of the tour reflects the entire experience, not just the food.
Your booking includes:
• A carefully designed route through different neighborhoods
• A professional guide paid a fair wage
• Multiple food tastings
• Transportation used during the tour
• Gratuities for the vendors
• Operational costs and taxes
• Support for our Game Changers program
In addition, the prices we pay vendors during the tour are not always the same as their regular menu prices.
When hosting a group experience, vendors dedicate time and space to the tour, prepare multiple tastings in a short period, and often serve smaller tasting portions rather than full menu items.
For this reason we agree on fair prices that compensate vendors for their time and participation, allowing us to maintain long-term relationships with the people who make the experience possible.
The remaining balance is collected in cash at the start of the tour because the experience includes tastings from multiple independent street food vendors located in traditional markets.
Many of these vendors operate in traditional market environments and do not accept credit cards.
For operational purposes, Eat Like A Local collects the remaining balance and manages these funds during the tour on behalf of the participants, using them to pay the vendors we visit for the tastings included in the experience.
This system allows us to work with small local vendors and ensure they are paid fairly for both their food and the time they dedicate to hosting our groups.
No. We do not accept Venmo, Zelle, or other money transfer apps.
The remaining balance must be paid in cash in Mexican Pesos at the start of the tour, as this cash is used during the experience to pay the street food vendors we visit.
No. The tour price is the same for all participants and discounts cannot be offered if you choose not to eat certain tastings or if you leave the tour early.
Individual dietary preferences, food restrictions, or early departures do not affect the price of the experience.
The price reflects the overall organization of the tour, including guide services, coordination with local vendors, logistics, and the full tasting experience.
For this reason, partial participation or skipped tastings do not qualify for price reductions or refunds.
We have been working with the same vendors since 2015 and carefully select the places we visit based on quality and hygiene.
However, food poisoning can happen anywhere — including high-end restaurants — and it is impossible to determine where it may come from.
If you have a very sensitive stomach or strong concerns about street food, this experience might not be the right fit.
Each tour includes a wide variety of tastings that may include:
• Tacos
• Quesadillas
• Carnitas
• Fruit and traditional sweets
• Regional drinks
• Market specialties
Please check the specific itinerary to have a better idea. Menus may vary depending on the route, vendor availability and seasonal ingredients.
Food tours are designed as culinary explorations, which means guests will try a variety of local dishes and flavors.
Not every tasting will necessarily match every personal preference, and that is part of discovering a cuisine.
Guests are always welcome to skip a tasting if they prefer, but substitutions are not always possible because we work with independent vendors and fixed tasting stops.
Most guests find that trying new things becomes one of the most memorable parts of the experience.
Eat Like A Local tours include multiple tastings throughout the experience, and most guests find the amount of food quite generous.
Because we visit several vendors and try a variety of dishes, the experience is designed to feel like a full culinary exploration of the neighborhood.
However, appetites vary from person to person, and guests are always welcome to eat as much or as little as they feel comfortable with.
Because we visit markets and street stalls, cross contamination cannot be controlled.
For this reason we cannot accommodate severe or life-threatening allergies.
Vegetarian options are often possible, but vegan diets or strict allergies may not be suitable for this experience.
Each tour includes a list of allergies and restrictions we can accommodate, please check the specific itinerary.
Vegetarians are welcome to join the tour; however, not all tastings have vegetarian alternatives. The specific options available may vary depending on the route and the vendors visited, so we recommend reviewing the description of each tour for details.
Please note that we cannot accommodate guests who are both vegetarian and dairy-free (vegan).
Additionally, many foods are prepared on shared cooking surfaces in market environments. This means that vegetarian items may be cooked on the same grills or surfaces as meat, and cross-contamination is possible.
If this is a concern for you, the tour may not be the best fit.
Vegan diets cannot be accommodated in our tours due the nature of the places we visit.
Walking distances vary depending on the specific tour route.
Some tours involve significant walking, while others may include subway rides or shorter distances between stops.
Because each experience is different, we strongly recommend reviewing the specific tour page and itinerary before booking to understand the walking requirements and overall route conditions.
Unfortunately not.
The tours involve:
• Markets with narrow aisles
• Crowded streets
• Subway stairs
• Uneven surfaces
For this reason the experience is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.
Some tours include Mexico City’s public transportation system, usually the subway or bus.
This is part of the local experience. However, trains can sometimes be crowded, hot, and busy, especially during peak hours.
Public transportation in Mexico City can also become very crowded during certain times of the day, which is a normal part of daily life in the city.
Please check the specific itinerary to see if it involves public transportation.
Yes.
Mexican markets are lively, busy, and sometimes chaotic environments, especially during peak hours.
The tour may involve walking through narrow market aisles, crowded spaces, and public transportation, which can sometimes feel intense for visitors who are not used to these environments.
For this reason, the experience may not be suitable for guests who are uncomfortable with crowds or who experience claustrophobia.
Tours operate rain or shine.
Markets and street life continue in most weather conditions, and the experience is designed to work even if it rains.
We recommend checking the forecast and bringing weather-appropriate clothing if needed.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
Avoid sandals, as market floors can be wet or slippery and they can get stuck in the subway doors.
Dress for the weather, as the experience takes place mostly outdoors.
We recommend not bringing valuables or expensive jewelry, especially items made of gold.
Like in any large city, crowded markets and busy streets can attract pickpockets or opportunistic theft.
To avoid problems, we suggest bringing only what you need for the tour and keeping personal belongings secure at all times.
Tours start exactly at the scheduled time and move through different markets.
Because the group continues along the route, late arrivals will not be able to catch up with the tour.
Cancellations are fully refundable up to 10 days before the tour date.
After that period, tours become non-refundable, as tastings, vendors, and guides are reserved in advance and the balance due will be charged to your card on file.
For cancellations contact us at [email protected]
Tours may be rescheduled up to 48 hours before the start time, subject to availability.
Rescheduling within 48 hours incurs a $40 USD fee per person.
For reschedules contact us at [email protected]
Our policies apply to all circumstances, including illness, travel delays, weather conditions, or changes in personal plans.
Because tours require advance coordination with vendors and guides, last-minute cancellations are not refundable and the remaining balance will be charged to your card on file.
Mexico City is one of the most visited cities in the world and receives millions of travelers every year.
Concerns related to news events or personal perceptions of safety do not qualify as valid reasons for cancellation unless an official government travel advisory specifically advises against travel to Mexico City.
Each tour has a specific meeting point and route.
The exact meeting location will be provided in your confirmation email after booking, along with directions and a Google Maps link.
Most tours start and finish in central neighborhoods of Mexico City, and the final stop is usually within walking distance of public transportation.
After completing your reservation, you will receive a confirmation email with all the details of your tour, including:
• Meeting point and directions
• Start time
• The remaining cash balance to bring
• Practical information to prepare for the experience
You will also receive a reminder email the day before your tour with your final start time and important details for the following day.
If you do not see the confirmation email in your inbox, please check your spam or junk folder, as automated emails can sometimes be filtered there.
The Game Changers program is an educational initiative created by Eat Like A Local that works with girls and young women from the La Merced and Jamaica markets.
The goal is to give them tools, education, and exposure to the world so they can build their own opportunities and futures.
The program focuses on several areas including:
• English lessons
• financial education
• cultural exchange through food
• mentoring and personal development
• exposure to different cultures and ideas
Some participants may occasionally join parts of the tour to practice their English and interact with travelers from around the world.
These participants are Junior Guides in training, and they are still learning. They may not always have all the answers or the same level of knowledge as the main guide leading the experience.
Your booking helps support these programs and the educational opportunities they provide.
This is not a charity program. The girls and young women who participate are smart, driven, and hardworking, and the program is designed to create opportunities and expand their perspectives rather than promote traditional charity dynamics.
During the tour we visit several independent street food vendors located in traditional markets and neighborhood food stalls.
The tastings included in the experience are paid directly to the vendors during the tour.
To make this possible, Eat Like A Local collects the remaining balance in cash at the start of the experience and manages these funds during the tour on behalf of the participants, using them to pay the vendors for the food served.
This system allows us to work with small local businesses that often operate in traditional market environments where credit card payments are not available.
It also allows us to ensure that vendors are paid fairly not only for the food, but also for the time and preparation required to host our groups.
Yes. Supporting local vendors is an important part of the philosophy behind Eat Like A Local.
We work with independent street food vendors and small family businesses located in traditional markets and neighborhood food stalls.
As part of the experience, vendors are paid directly for the food served during the tour, and we work to ensure they are compensated fairly not only for the tastings but also for the time and preparation required to host our groups.
Our goal is to create experiences that benefit both our guests and the local communities we work with.
Eat Like A Local is a women-led and women owned company, and all of our tour guides are women.
One of our goals is to create professional opportunities for women in the tourism industry, where guiding positions have traditionally been dominated by men.
However, the street food vendors we visit during the tour are independent local businesses within the markets, and they may be run by both men and women.
Our intention is to support the entire local market community, while ensuring that guiding roles within Eat Like A Local remain focused on empowering women.
